Job Description

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: (Position Summary)

The Software Developer 2 position is responsible for assisting in the analysis, design, build, test and implementation of solutions that meet business and customer needs. This position supports custom and third-party applications and systems implementations with guidance from manager and senior developers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned.

The following duties and responsibilities are designed to fulfill the goals set forth by Affirmative’s 3-C’s Initiative. It should be the goal of every Affirmative employee to meet and exceed the expectations associated with Customer Orientation, Consistency, and Cost Structure. It is important to consider these objectives when carrying out the following duties:

  • Demonstrated hands-on knowledge in one or more of the following programming languages: Visual Basic.NET (VB.NET), Visual Basic 6 (VB6), C Sharp (C#), ASP.NET and Transact-SQL (T-SQL)
  • Demonstrated hands-on knowledge in any of the following IT Systems: Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), Crystal Reports, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), Extensible Markup Language (XML) and SharePoint
  • Obtain an understanding of business processes.
  • Study the existing database schemas to gain an understanding of how operational data is stored.
  • Communicate with business users to understand business needs and challenges.
  • Communicate with other software developers to understand how application components interact with one another.
  • Analyze the needs of business users and design solutions to meet those needs.
  • Gather and document requirements from business users.
  • Advise business users in design of solutions.
  • Assist in research and recommendation of third-party solutions.
  • Consult with other systems developers as needed to determine optimal solution and analyze areas of impact with other business processes.
  • Coordinate with manager and business users in determining priority of solution implementation.
  • When required, seek support of senior developers in designing solution.
  • Implement solutions independently or as part of a team when required.
  • Implement solutions through development of custom software or installation and configuration of third-party software.
  • Work independently or as part of a team to ensure the success of the implementation.
  • Document implementation as appropriate.
  • Report problems to manager, team members, and business users in a prompt manner.
  • Report status of implementation to manager, team members, and business users.
  • Ensure that solutions are adequately tested prior to deployment.
  • Deploy solutions with the coordination of team members and business users.
  • Document deployment issues and recovery scenarios when required.
  • Prior to deployment, coordinate with training department and business users as needed to minimize disruption and ensure effective use of a solution.
  • Oversee deployment of solution and the resolution of deployment issues.
  • Report status of deployment to manager and business users as instructed by manager.
  • Assist in training business users as needed.
  • Maintain and modify solutions as business needs require.
  • Report problems to manager, team members, and business users in a prompt manner.
  • Troubleshoot and debug issues as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with manager and business users in determining in determining priority of changes.
  • Design and implement maintainable solutions.
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to effectively and clearly present information and answer questions in a wide variety of situations.
  • Must be able to read and interpret written reports and various forms of written communication and respond in an appropriate manner.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate with people in a timely and efficient manner while maintaining a high level of professionalism.
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to exercise good judgment in sensitive matters and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • High energy level, comfortable performing multifaceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills. Must be tactful and flexible and have the ability to get along with diverse personalities.
  • Ability to work independently but the experience to identify the need to partner at critical junctures in any business decision making activity.
  • Ability to prioritize activities and projects. Skilled at time management and attention to administrative detail. Refined sense of urgency.
  • Must be flexible and willing to accept a wide range of tasks and projects.
