About Magic Bus:

Established in 1999, Magic Bus works to change the lives of children living in poverty in India. Over the past 13 years, Magic Bus has used its unique “sport for development” approach to empower children and youth in making effective life choices in the areas of education, livelihood, leadership, health, and gender equality. By providing positive role models for children, Magic Bus inspires them to go to school, bridge gender and social divides and bring about change in their communities.

The Magic Bus programme is aimed at under privileged children from marginalized settings like slums, streets, institutions, rural and tribal areas. The impact is clear, with the levels of school enrolment rising from around 50% to over 90% among the children on our programme and 75% of those who dropped out of school now re-enrolling.

Through 12 years of programming, Magic Bus has built a strong track record which has been acknowledged by communities, development organisations, governments and policy makers worldwide. In 2003, Magic Bus received the World Bank Developmental Marketplace Award for ‘Mentoring at-risk children.’ Other awards include the Voices for Children ‘Humanitarian of the Year 2004’ and Global Fund for Children Sustainability Award 2005. In March 2011, Magic Bus signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Government to deliver sport for development programmes in rural areas. These accolades recognise our standing in both the national and global sport for development arenas.

Magic Bus currently works with 170,000 children living in poverty per year. In the next three years we aim to expand across India, by training young leaders to deliver our programme, reaching out to one million children and young people each year. The programme has expanded to other areas of India including Delhi, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra over the last few years.

Magic Bus UK:

Magic Bus has operated in the UK since 2003 when we were first registered as a charity. Magic Bus is currently a small team of three people in addition to two interns, volunteers and an active Board of Trustees. The team has achieved success over the last few years securing major long term partnerships with Barclays, Comic Relief, the Premier League, Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the Bernard Lewis Charitable Family Trust.

Lord Sebastian Coe, Tessa Jowell, Dame Kelly Holmes, Ian Botham, Boris Becker, Dame Tanni Grey Thompson and Sir Steve Redgrave are recent visitors to the Magic Bus programme in India.
